fishermen and the sea

Thursday, October 28, 2004

San Juan, Batangas (Canon EOS50)

Even before the sun rises, these fishermen
already had their work done. They go out after
midnight hoping that before daylight, they will
have enough catch to sustain their daily needs.

Ode To the Sea

HERE
Surrounding the island
There's sea.
But what sea?
It's always overflowing.
Says yes,
Then no,
Then no again,
And no,
Says yes
In blue
In sea spray
Raging,
Says no
And no again.
It can't be still.
It stammers
My name is sea.

It slaps the rocks
And when they aren't convinced,
Strokes them
And soaks them
And smothers them with kisses.
With seven green tongues
Of seven green dogs
Or seven green tigers
Or seven green seas,
Beating its chest,
Stammering its name,

Oh Sea,
This is your name.
Oh comrade ocean,
Don't waste time
Or water
Getting so upset
Help us instead.
We are meager fishermen,
Men from the shore
Who are hungry and cold
And you're our foe.
Don't beat so hard,
Don't shout so loud,
Open your green coffers,
Place gifts of silver in our hands.
Give us this day
our daily fish.

~Pablo Neruda

Mt. Batulao, Batangas (Canon EOS50)

Taken at the top of Mt. Batulao's peak.
I'm not sure what mountain is that.
It was early in the morning...
The sun was trying to escape the clouds
covering it.

Found this decaying log along the shore of this
beautiful beach. The log and other natural dirt
added to the simplicity of the place.

Can you see the whole picture?!
Yes, that's my face :D

I tried this COOL software which I discovered
from a friend. I always wanted to do this
since I saw this Truman Show Poster.
They should make this software of the year!!!

Baguio City (Sony DSC-P52)

[clockwise] Ella, Jukey, Jun & Ronnie

Our very relaxing Baguio trip last year...
It was raining the whole time we were there.
So most of the time, we just stayed at
Jun's house eating, drinking while having
some nice conversations...
good deviation from the usual Baguio itinerary :)

Quiapo, Manila (Holga 120S)

This was one of my first shots using
the Holga. I still didn't remove the 6x4.5
mask... hence, the rectangular instead of the
more popular square format.

I just bought a new shoes today for my
new hobby/sports. I'm excited to use them
later :D

Mt. Batulao, Batangas (Canon EOS50)

I didn't realize that trail on this mountain
is actually a ridge until I saw this picture.
If you look closely, you can see the campsites
of the different groups.

Pat-yay, Mt. Province (Canon EOS50)

This was literally in the middle of nowhere!
It was such a sight when we saw this view... I couldn't
even imagine how and for how long did they make
these rice terraces. It was not as grand as the pyramids
in Egypt I suppose, but nevertheless, the efforts made
to build these terraces should be comparable to other
great structures.

How did we get here..you might wonder...
You have to trek a couple of hours to/from this
village. It is inaccessible to any form of vehicles.
From Mt. Amuyao, we trekked to this village for
nearly 12 hours!!! Yep, that's right...12 hours!!!
Then the next day, another 8 hours going to the
next village. We were trekking for 3 days until
finally we arrived at the last village before going
back to Banaue by jeepney!
It was an experience we wouldn't forget...
It's unfortunate that I'm not a good writer.
There are so many stories to tell during this
climb.

The Fort, Taguig (Sony DSC-P52)

A few lines from one of my fave
songs from my fave band.

Satellite in my eyes
Like a diamond in the sky
How I wonder.
Satellite strung from the moon
And the world your balloon
Peeping tom for the mother's station
Winter's cold spring erases
And the calm away by the storm is chasing
Everything good needs replacing
Look up, look down all around, hey satellite.

Dikasalarin Trail, Aurora (Lomo LC-A)

An unusual tree found along the trail
going to Dikasalarin Beach. It's quite
tall but doesn't have many branches.

-----------------------------------
We had our annual med exam today.
It was just the usual routine check-up but
somehow we haven't gotten used to it.
I somehow got scared when the doctor asked
my family illness background. We had/have
all the bad illnesses (heart failure, diabetes,
cancer) that can be passed genetically.

Lamut, Ifugao (shot taken by Jeg)

My life is my message.
-Mahatma Gandhi

I think it's about time I post something
about myself. If you don't want to read
something about me... i don't care! hahaha
It's my blog anyways. :P

Who said only Colin (of TAR5) can do these
kinds of things?! hehe My active lifestyle
begun after I graduated from college. Before, my
activities only consisted of sleeping and eating.
Ok, I also did a lot of walking during college going
from one classroom to another... it's a big campus!
But other than this, I don't have any sports or
outdoor activities to keep those muscles in use.
A few years after college, I was introduced to
mountaineering. This was the first step in doing
so many things I never thought I could do.
It even made me a photographer! I've been
to different places... met a lot of people...
did a lot of things... these made me appreciate life
more.
It was a good thing that I was working
already since it cost quite a lot to do these stuff.
I guess being able to afford it was a big factor.
But I'd like to believe that loving doing these
things is still the main factor.

Do I like my life right now? hell ye! I love it!
Am I a better person now?
umm.. that I need to find out!

Taal Lake, Batangas (Canon EOS50)

I pity this horse. Eventhough the area
is flourishing with tall grasses, it seemed
to be insufficient for this horse's diet.
I guess going up and down the mountain
is really hard for this poor fellow.

Corregidor, Bataan (Sony DSC-P52)

Corregidor is one the windows of our past.
There's so much to see here!
One should go here... if you're not into history,
just the view itself is worth the trip

Inside one of the ruins at Corregidor,
I took this shot while these tourists were
reading some historical facts outside
the building.
